Facts about Azerbaijan and Baku

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND POPULATION

Azerbaijan is situated in Front Asia, in the east part of Caucasus. The republic borders with Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Turkey and Russia, its total territory is 86.600 sq. km. The population is 8 million people.

VISAS

They are short-term (from 3 days to 3 months) and long-term (up to one year). The directions are business and tourist visas. They are registered through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

CLIMATE

The country is located at the turn of mild and sub­tropical zones; therefore, the climatic conditions are van ous. The average temperature in mid-January fluctuates from +3″ to -6?.C and in July-August it reaches +30?-35″ C. The number oi sunny hours reaches 2900 a year. Precipitation is tew.

CLOTHES

From May to September, the population of the sea­shore regions wear light summer clothes, in winter- warm raincoats and jackets.

LANGUAGE

The state language is Azeri, besides; the overwhelm­ing majority of the population fluently speak Russian, many of them understand and speak Turkish, Persian, Georgian and other languages. In the hotels, bars and company offices, English is prevalent.

ALCOHOL BEVERAGES

In all the restaurants and bars, alcohol beverages are served. In addition, those wishing to drink can get them in numerous markets without exception.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Usual photography and video-shooting (except the subway-metro) are allowed, however, while making a film of strangers by the rules of politeness is recom­mended to   ask for.

WORK HOURS

The weekend is usually consid­ered to be Saturday and Sunday (mainly for the state offices), though many stores and supermar­kets work every day. The beginning of the workday is at 8.00-9.00 o’clock, trade objects dose at 21.00-23.00 o’clock, the restaurants and bars considerably late.

CURRENCY

The national currency is manat (m). 1 US$ = 4.920m. The exchange of any currency is carried out in the banks or numerous exchange offices. The banks usually work from 10.00   to 17.00-18.00.

CREDIT CARDS

In the hotels, big trade centers and supermarkets, interna­tional credit cards and US dollars are accepted. In small stores and restaurants cash is paid (as a rule in manats).

TRADE DEALS

It is allowed to argue about the prices in the markets; it is a usual phenomenon. The salesmen compromise in many cases.

COMMUNICATION

Telephone communication is fulfilled without a problem. The hotels have a direct international code link as well as the accom­panying office facilities: faxes, telexes, computers, internet and others. Internet services are also rendered in numerous private agencies. The tokens for the use of public phones are sold in the subway and news-agencies.

MASS MEDIA

Along with the Azen newspapers and magazines, there are periodicals in English and Russian, and a lot of Russian publica­tions

ELECTRICITY

The power in the power grid is 220/240 V 50 Hz.

WATER

Tap water is safe for drinking, but in the hotels and res­taurants spring water is mainly used in plastic bottles or boiled water.

MEDICAL SERVICE

The first medical aid is usually free. There are also private paid medical clinics and services, doctors that can speak a for­eign language. In the chemists’ there is a big choice of medica­ments and most of them are open 24 hours.

TRANSPORT

The public transport is presented by Baku metro and numer­ous minibuses. At any time of the day, you can use the services of private taxis, which will take you to the needed point in Azerbaijan. It is better to establish the price in advance.

CUSTOMS RULES

The import quota allows to bring three liters of spirits and three boxes of cigarettes and the presence of technical passport is necessary for the owner of transport means. The export of black caviar must not exceed 600gr. For the goods and objects of art, having cultural and historical value, it is necessary to have a permit of a complying Ministry of Azerbaijan.
